An early Dan James goal put United in the driving seat however Jannik Vestergaard's second half header got the 10-man Southampton a draw at home to the Red Devils
With Redmond out with an ankle injury, that means a loss of reliability in front of goal for the Saints, bringing more pressure on Adams to break his scoring duck.
The Saints team : Gunn, Danso, Bednarek , Vestergaard, Cedric, Ward-Prowse, Romeu, Hojberg, Boufal, Ings and Adams
An injury to Martial and Lingard being dropped to the bench allowed a start to Pereira and Mata
The United team: De Gea, Young, Lindelöf, Maguire, Wan-Bissaka, Pogba, McTominay, Mata, James, Pereira and Rashford.
The Red Devils started off well with Dan James getting his third goal in four matches, firing a brilliant strike into the top corner, after an assist from Scott McTominay, from the edge of the penalty area to call off an exciting spell for both teams including a long shot from Sofiane Boufal that went just wide of the post as well as a volley from £50 million man Aaron Wan-Bissaka that skimmed the bar from 9 yards out. Southampton's most recent signing Kevin Danso then got his first yellow card for a cynical foul on Brazilian youngster Andreas Pereira and a Dan James effort was palmed away by Angus Gunn, which was all for the first half.
In the 58th minute a good team move from Saints, Boufal and Ward-Prowse's link up fell for a great chance for new striker Che Adams, who is yet to score for the Saints after his move from Birmingham, but he put it both high and wide from 8 yards out. James Ward-Prowse's corner was flicked on by Danny Ings and forced an outstanding save from David De Gea ; however Danso picked up the pieces and put in a wonderful delivery towards Vestergaard who out jumped Swedish defender Victor Lindelöf and his glancing header flew into the top corner to tie the game. Scott McTominay, who had recently been recalled to the Scotland side, went on a surging run past 2 Southampton midfielders and was brought down on the slide tackle by already booked defender Kevin Danso - which gave Mike Dean no choice but to give him the second yellow. Southampton managed to hold on for the remaining 18 minutes despite a late chance from Rashford and a possible penalty shout after Greenwood went down, as well as a Greenwood shot saved by Gunn and a curling shot from distance from capain Young that went agonisingly close.
In interviews after the game, Saints boss Ralph Hassenhuttl said, "It is an unbelievable performance mentally from my team, it was a massive week we had 3 injuries and played 20 minutes with a man less"
While Solskjaer claimed that," We started off well, got the game where we wanted, that's where you need to finish the game off. There were spaces but we just weren't clinical. We created so many chances but the last bit wasn't there."
This result means United still haven't won away in the premier league since February. Oh dear!
