It has been recently reported that the European Super League, discussed since the 1990s, looks ever increasingly likely to occur. Believed to be rivalling the UEFA Champions League, who will launch their official plans for to rebrand tomorrow, the new European Super League would offer much more money, satisfying the big clubs' desire to recoup money lost during the pandemic.
UEFA were originally looking into the possibilities of creating a 36 team Champions League. However, this is being opposed by the European Super League that according to the Athletic would have a 20-team competition, including 15 clubs with the permanent rights to remain within the league, while the other 5 qualify annually.
The 20 teams would split into two 10 team groups and play each other home and away, resulting in a top four of each group. A play off between the groups would be seen as the quarter finals, semi-finals and consequently a final with the winner raking in a massive £1 billion.
It is rumoured that the 12 teams to sign up consist of Real Madrid, Barcelona, Atletico Madrid, Inter Milan, AC Milan, Juventus, Man United, Liverpool, Man City, Arsenal, Chelsea, and Spurs, with Bayern Munich and PSG rejecting the offer.
This has resulted in panic within the domestic leagues and UEFA, with the Premier League issuing an ultimatum to its six clubs that they must quit the premier league to compete in this competition, and the players will be banned from playing elsewhere-even internationally!
This is undoubtedly a shocking decision as every team should have the chance to play at the highest level within a meritocracy and with 15 teams guaranteed to stay in this European Super League, it limits the chances for the less established teams as waiting is given based on a club’s history. While inviting Arsenal to the competition might seem like a good idea as they are a big club based on their past, their lack of elite performances in recent times makes it a travesty to more capable teams. Snatching a draw against Fulham doesn’t seem like suitable credentials to play in a ‘Super League.’
The new idea seems born out of complete greed from the owners and investors on the basis of self-interest, taking money away from the fans yet again.
Is this the end of the beautiful game as we know it? This story is set to run!
