Tavernier Talented Enough For England?

Without a doubt, the right back spot is England's most contested position with the likes of Trent Alexander-Arnold, Reece James, Kyle Walker and Kieran Trippier all vying for the position. With the Euros coming up in the Summer, Rangers right back James Tavernier has been performing with great ability in the Scottish Premiership, doing all he can to be recognised by Southgate.

Formerly of Newcastle United and Wigan, the 29-year-old is becoming known for his set-piece ability. Given a lot of attacking freedom under Gerrard, the defender has been getting a lot of goal contributions with 17 goals and 12 assists in 27 games during the 20/21 season. Tavernier has been turning heads with his natural physicality along with his attacking prowess earning him comparisons to Kyle Walker by ex-Rangers fullback Michael Ball.

The fullback has been linked with many Premier League clubs such as Everton, Tottenham and West Ham, any of which could be a good step up in terms of his chances to get into the England squad with English teams seemingly commanding more respect than their counterparts north of the border. According to Transfermarkt, Tavernier is valued at £4.5m but any new team would need a fee of at least £20m to have even the slightest of chances to prise the Rangers captain away from Glasgow. To get a call up from Southgate the attack-minded fullback will need to keep up all his hard work and continue to impress under Gerrard.
